Thomas Concrete Group delivers to groundbreaking German construction project

Thomas Concrete Group is involved in the groundbreaking Moringa Hamburg HafenCity project, where 80 percent of the material used in the tall residential building will be reusable. Thomas Concrete Group has developed and delivered low-carbon concrete to this revolutionary project.

The innovative residential building in Hamburg is owned by the German family company Moringa GmbH and is being built according to the Cradle-to-Cradle® principle. This means that the materials can be reused, enabling an almost closed material loop throughout the lifecycle of the building.

The project, which is expected to be completed in 2024, consists of approximately 220 rental apartments, communal spaces, a co-living concept, co-working areas, a daycare center, as well as shops and restaurants.

The unique Cradle-to-Cradle® principle makes the building 80 percent recycled, as construction and interior materials can be dismantled, sorted, and reused.

Thomas Concrete Group’s subsidiary Thomas Beton in Germany supplies approximately 17,000 cubic meters of low-carbon concrete from the THOMAGREEN® SILVER product serie, which offers up to 40 percent lower CO₂ footprint compared to traditional concrete. In addition to the low carbon footprint, which is significantly lower than the industry reference value, a large proportion of recycled aggregate material is also used in the concrete.

The building is the first high-rise residential building in Germany to be constructed according to the Cradle-to-Cradle principle®. Sustainability is also a key aspect of the concrete used, further highlighted by the certification from the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC).

“It’s important for us to be at the forefront of sustainability in all our projects, but participating with our expertise in such a revolutionary project is, of course, particularly exciting. Back in 2012, we were the first in Sweden to offer low-carbon concrete, so it's really inspiring to participate in buildings that have a strong focus on reuse as well,” says Hans Karlander, CEO and Group President of Thomas Concrete Group AB.

Thomas Concrete Group advances research on slag from Boliden

In collaboration with Boliden, the concrete company Thomas Concrete Group is currently researching a new binder where slag — or a so-called SCM product — from Boliden's smelters can be used as a cement substitute in concrete. This approach could result in both reduced climate impact and decreased energy usage.
For some time now, Thomas Concrete Group has been studying how the SCM product (Suppl
